Area: Philantropy, Fundraising, Media

About:

The Daily Beast, veteran journalist Tina Brown’s curated news-politics-culture-and-the-kitchen-sink site, just launched a new section in collaboration with Global Philanthropy Group. Dubbed “Giving Beast,” this part of the site hosts articles, videos and photo galleries “of people, places and issues that need our support,” wrote Brown in a email note to subscribers.

Description:

A lot of — well, all of — The Daily Beast is very celebrity- and pop-culture driven: boldface names, top news stories and media power struggles populate the site. And this may actually be a good thing for Giving Beast. While the “come for the crosswords, stay for the war crimes stories” theory of print newspapers hasn’t always proven true with online publications, one would think that there’s a chance that someone already interested in Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher would be inclined to read another story about them — one that happens to be about ending the global sex slavery trade.

At the end of this story — as well as features like United Nations Secretary-General Ban-ki Moon’s photos of global climate change and Warren Buffett’s “solution for solving Africa’s hunger problem” — there is a sidebar with direct links on ways to give with affiliated organizations like the Free the Slaves, World Food Programme and the Liya Kebede Foundation, and ways to volunteer through All For Good.

There are also the usual tabs for sharing the articles, photos or video via Twitter, Facebook, email and Digg. Those registered on the site can also leave comments.

The Basics:

WHO: The Daily Beast with Global Philanthropy Group

WHAT: Giving Beast, a section of The Daily Beast site where people can read articles and view videos and photos about different charitable causes, and then donate or volunteer. Much like the site itself, Giving Beast reflects careful curating — think of it as top (often celebrity-supported) charity picks.

WHERE: All over.

HOW to get involved: Check out the Giving Beast features — and make sure to click the links on how to give time or money at the end.
