Looking at this in the context of Facebook's privacy battles of late, should we be more worried about the data Facebook will collect about users' political or policy preferences?

If you were the RNC, would you want to target fence-sitters for by congressional district? If you were Facebook, would you refuse to allow your ad platform to be used in such a way?

I agree this effort from Facebook has miles to go. If this is meant to be yet another of Facebook's extortion efforts to extract ad revenue (for Facebook) or promote the developer ecosystem (applications for pages) then this effort will ultimately deserve our scorn.

On the other hand, I'd be supportive of Facebook creating for the community the kinds of applications that reward considered debate over hit and run sniping.

I'd love to see Facebook seek out partners for the advancement of reasonable ideas to solve common problems. The chaos of individual fan pages for members of the house and senate won't help much in that regard, however.

I've come across the Every Woman Matters campaign on Facebook several times, and became very interested in the walk. NSLIJ did a great job, and I expect they will get a fantastic turnout. Thanks for posting.

I will say this: The fact that Mr. Hayward is willing to, ultimately, accept [some] responsibility, done publicly even, is admirable.

There is not one among us who, at some point in our own development, hasn't taken the long route to the acceptance of our own responsibility. We forestalled the acceptance of responsibility so that we wouldn't have to feel guilt, wouldn't have to accept consequences, wouldn't have to feel like failures, wouldn't have to pay up... The only difference in this situation is that the stakes are much higher for Mr. Hayward.

Accepting that, because of the mere existence of his organization, irreparable damage has been done to the livelihood of an untold number of individuals, our economy, our marine ecosystem and--something that may mean little to those of us who aren't stakeholders or those of us who put the well-being of our fellow humans and the condition of the environment above money--his company's bottom line.

I applaud Mr. Hayward and BP's most recent response and attempts at transparency. Hayward shows at least some of the characteristics of a Malan person.

BP is doing a horrible job. Their brand is BP and they don't have a BP Facebook page. Hiding behind "Deep Water Horizon Response" disconnects their efforts from their brand. As for Twitter, they had nothing for seven days, and since then have just promoted old fashioned press releases. Their presence on YouTube and LinkedIn is similarly weak. Since BP clearly has no social media strategy and no clue how to use Twitter, we are collecting ideas for them at:http://bit.ly/benQw2

Nice story - great episode in social media organizing, especially by young people.

I will note, however, that "flash activism" sounds an awful lot like "flash causes" from my book CauseWired (Wiley, 2008) - not sure the estimable ThinkSocial first identified that concept!

What does the message from the Governor's office mean?
"It is also our firm hope that the students were motivated by youthful rebellion or spring fever – and not by encouragement from any one-sided view of the current budget crisis in New Jersey. "
I hope that they were not motivated by "youthful rebellion or spring fever," but instead by a desire to change the circumstances of their life.
New Jersey's governor doesn't have much respect for the students in his state.
