Since 2005, Hollaback has served as a resource and support organization for subjects of street harassment, first in New York city and now in cities like Toronto, Chicago and Hong Kong where it has inspired similar efforts.

Getting harassed or rudely catcalled on the streets of New York? Snap the perpetrator’s picture with your cellphone, or take a video, and share it with the online community of Hollaback. The site even has a “Holla Shame” for particularly vile harassers, and you can also “tweet from the street” @iHollaback and #hbnyc. Hollaback’s site also includes legal resources on street harassment, related news, and of course, links to press on Hollaback — and it’s gotten quite a bit of media attention, from Katie Couric’s CBS blog to NPR.

(Here’s some frequently asked questions, for more info.)

Hollaback is preparing to launch an iPhone app to make catching perps even easier. The organization is fundraising on Kickstarter to produce it, with a deadline of this Friday, May 28.

Name: World Malaria Day and Twitter Challenge for Malaria No More

Nominated Category: Organization/Collaboration

URL: http://www.malarianomore.org/news/features/world_malaria_day_world_malaria_day__april_25__2

Area: Advocacy, Fundraising

About:

Malaria kills a child in Africa every 30 seconds, and results in $12 billion every year in lost productivity, according to non-profit Malaria No More. The organization is working toward actualizing its name making malaria, truly, no more and enlisting social media methods to do so.

Description:

Working toward an ambitious Dec. 31, 2010 goal of universal access to malaria treatment and prevention in Africa, Malaria No More asked supporters to pitch in on Global Malaria Day this past April. Supporters were asked to follow Malaria No More on Twitter to Tweet and save lives; attend a global Facebook event to take a stand; sign an online proclamation showing support of President Barack Obama’s pledge to end malaria deaths by 2015; and donate money to purchase mosquito nets to prevent children from being bitten by (malaria-carrying) mosquitoes at night.

Malaria No More also had a few high-profile events a BritWeek dinner in Los Angeles featuring former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, for example, the One World Against Malaria summit with other activist partners but perhaps what got the most attention this Global Malaria Day was the involvement of a one Ashton Kutcher.

Malaria No More and Kutcher (@aplusk) partnered to raise awareness on Twitter by tweeting the message about malaria with Kutcher pledging to donate 10,000 mosquito nets to the cause if he could beat CNN to one million Twitter followers. (Remember that?) He did, he donated, and then CNN matched his net pledge, other celebrities like Oprah and Ryan Seacrest made donations as well as non-celebrity Twitter users worldwide. According to Malaria No More, the bed nets will be distributed to families in Senegal this November.

Area: Non-profit, fundraising, advocacy

About:

charity: water is a non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Description:

Through multiple projects, charity: water fundraises to build freshwater wells, provide rainwater catchments and sand filters, and other initiatives to provide clean drinking water for the 1.1 billion people around world who go without. For its “Born in September” campaign — inspired by charity: water’s founder, Scott Harrison asking friends on his September birthday to donate money, which in turn went to a refugee camp to build wells — the organization is asking that people give up their birthday, wedding and anniversary gifts and have friends donate money to charity: water instead. The organization has created a mycharity: water part of the web site, where those interested can create their own fundraising pages and raise money, any time of the year.

How does it all work? Charity: water doesn’t actually dig the wells, or procure rainwater catchments. Instead, through the site’s donation pages and rather straight-forward-ly-named donation campaigns like “Water For Schools,” charity: water passes on donations to its partner organizations, who then buy the necessary supplies to build wells. As the umbrella organization, charity: water also sends photographers along with charity: water staffers to document the projects in order to share them with the community of folks who donated.

charity: water shows visitors to the Web site “why water?” through video, photos and other media the reasons behind the cause. And the proof? They also uses photos, video and GPS coordinate plotted in Google Earth to show each well built as a result of the organization’s efforts. There’s also space on the Web site that charts the progress of ongoing projects in easily digestible shorthand (using little symbols for water towers and wells).

Since charity: water was founded in three years ago, it’s completed 1,247 water projects and aided roughly 650,000 people in places ranging from Cote D’Ivoire to Bangladesh to Haiti. According to the mycharity: water main page, there is currently 7760 members of the online community, 88 projects, and roughly $443,000 raised to date.

Name: Invisible Children

Nominated Category: Organization

URL: http://www.invisiblechildren.com

Area: Non-profit, advocacy and fundraising

About:

Invisible Children Inc. aims to bring global attention to youth affected by ongoing war in northern Uganda and the organization does so with high-profile campaigns where supporters abduct themselves for the abducted, arrange mass sleep-ins in urban centers, and arrange screenings of its founders documentary of the same name.

Description:

One recent campaign, the Rescue, involved rescue riders biking between cities and was publicly backed by Oprah Winfrey and drew press from media outlets like CNN, with fellow riders and their supports kept in the loop via Twitter.

Twitter — for which Invisible Children as an organization has an account, as well as separate accounts for big projects and campaigns — is the social media tool Invisible Children is most reliant on, for communication and for relaying information about new and current efforts. It also has presence on Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, and other video channels that host the “Invisible Children: The Rough Cut” documentary.

Donation pages on the organization’s Web site benefit schools and outreach to bring home former child soldiers. The site also sells Invisible Children bracelets and apparel. With its foray into apparel and accessories, Invisible Children Inc. has made itself and its mission a brand; call it cheesy, but unisex Day-Glo tank tops and made-in-Uganda bracelets get the Invisible Children name out there.

It s near impossible to measure how much impact Invisible Children’s campaigns can have on actually stopping child abduction, much less stopping a war, in another country. But the organization’s efforts have drawn considerable public attention, from media and U.S. legislators. It’s currently focused on continued pressure on Congress to put a Uganda-centric bill in play and winning President Barack Obama’s support. Shorter-term projects like Schools to Schools, where donations go toward education and schoolbuilding in Uganda, have shown tangible, brick-and-mortar results which are necessary to convince supporters to continue backing the cause.

The Basics:

WHO: Invisible Children Inc.

WHAT: Invisible Children Inc. — a non-profit named after the documentary that inspired it raises money and brings attention to child soldiers in Uganda and children’s rights violations around the world.

WHERE: Based in the United States, recipients of the organization’s aid are primarily in Uganda.

HOW to get involved: Via donation pages on the web site and opportunities to join in on different campaigns and projects. To execute these projects successfully, Invisible Children relies predominantly on Twitter as a communication vehicle; it also has a presence on Facebook and Myspace

It’s near impossible to measure how much impact Invisible Children’s campaigns can have on actually stopping child abduction, much less stopping a war, in another country.

Area: Advocacy, Media

About:

In 1988, on the Human Rights Now! Tour, musician Peter Gabriel brought along a Sony Handycam to document stories of people he met. Five years later, with this see it, film it, change it mission, Gabriel was able to start WITNESS, an organization dedicated to exposing human rights violations around the world and telling the stories of victims through video.

Description:

WITNESS uses video and other multimedia technologies to open the eyes of the world to human rights violations. WITNESS partners with different human rights organizations to train them to tell stories via video and, now, other online technologies. In the last two decades, WITNESS, which became an independent non-profit organization since 2001, has trained and partnered with hundreds of human rights activists to use video as part of their campaigns, to tell victims stories but also promote public engagement and policy change.

Two years ago, in acknowledgment of the popularity and potential of camera phones, WITNESS launched an online video-sharing community called the Hub. On the site, members can upload videos, audio and photos, or simply watch — and comment — on what others have posted. You can also join or create groups to showcase your work. There are plans to make the Hub, currently available in English, Spanish and French, in other languages; create downloadable videos, petitions and interactive Google Maps; and a mobile version of the Hub optimized for cell phones.

The regular WITNESS site also has information on how to act now whether it be writing letters to government officials or boycotting clothing labels with unfair labor practices. Current campaigns include contacting Bulgarian education authorities and urging them to support educational integration of Romani Children, and asking the UN Security Council to take action on Burma.

WHAT: WITNESS teaches people how to use video as a powerful vehicle to make people aware of human rights abuses around the world and then shows those videos on Witness.org to reach a greater audience.
